Details regarding the design and completion of the Veteran's Memorial

Georgetown County Veterans Memorial

New Veterans Memorial

So we never forget them and are ever grateful for the gift of liberty and freedom they secured for us all, the Georgetown County Veterans Memorial is dedicated to all those men and women from Georgetown and Georgetown County:

  • who answered when their community called.
  • who gave of their time, their health and some even their life.
  • who ask for nothing more than to be remembered for what they did.

The Memorial is the result of a joint project of the Georgetown American Legion Post 114 and the Georgetown VFW Post 6444 with significant support and encouragement from the Georgetown Memorial Hospital. The memorial was envisioned by R.E. Hathaway, VFW Quartermaster and M. J Alfonsi, American Legion Post Adjutant who presented the plan to their respective memberships in the summer of 2011. A separate 501(c)3 organization raised community funds and broke ground in 2014. The Memorial was completed and dedicated in December 2016.
Spanning time from the American Revolution to the War on Terror, the Memorial is a stirring, salient salute to Georgetown County veterans and memorializes those who died in service to this country. The narrative texts, on the NW face of the monument slabs were each written by local authors to describe how each conflict affected the Georgetown area. The names on the SE face of the monument slabs list those veterans who died during the particular conflict. The two largest slabs list American Legion and VFW members from their posts’ inception until 2016.
Funded solely by public contributions and receiving no government assistance, the Memorial still requires donations in order to provide continuing maintenance.

The memorial is financed by donations from corporations, foundations and individuals, A memorial walkway of bricks is laid around the base of the memorial. For a donation of $150 or more, your name or the name of someone you wish to honor will be inscribed on a brick laid in the walkway. Your engraved brick or monument will affirm for posterity your respect for the men and women who risk their lives for the freedom we value.

The memorial is inscribed with the names of all identified Georgetown County military veterans who died during any of our country's wars. The names will be listed by conflict starting with the Revolutionary War. For those who died during the War Between the States, both Confederate and Union soldiers will be listed as appropriate.
